THE SOCIALIZATION FROM PUPPIES:

From birth to adulthood, pups go through a number of phases. Phases in which a lot happens and/or is suppose to happen to make sure that the dogs grow up to be mentally and physically healthy dogs. The first two phases, the neonatal phase (0-2 weeks) and the following phase (the third week) we won’t discus now.

WHAT IS SOCIALIZATION AND INCULCATION ?

With new-born mammals, after birth we see some quick, short learning-processes take place, where the young and the mother animal learn about each others marks and this way recognize each other. These learning-processes occur during a short, sensitive phase and is known as INCULCATION. The inculcation-phase varies in length for different species from one hour till approximately 2 days. Also with dogs inculcation probably takes place: the pups and the bitch learn to recognize each other in the first few days by smell (smell-inculcation). With dogs next to inculcation identical learning-processes take place, which are more extended in time. These learning-processes, which occur during a longer sensitive phase, are known as SOCIALIZATION. Socialization-phases can take several weeks (the rat) till several years (humans).
