Gran Mastín de Borínquen Puppies
2011 Gran Mastín de Borínquen Puppies:
The Gran Mastin de Borinquen, also known as the Puerto Rican Mastiff, is the only breed native to the island of Puerto Rico. The Borinquen Mastiff is a blend of Spanish War Mastiffs, traditional island dogs and Latin American Molossers, all brought to the island for from colonial times. The Mastin is noble, courageous, hardy, strong and loyal dog very suited to the various terrain of the island. The Gran Mastin deserves recognition for their role in the Indian Spanish wars. There are many heroic tales of dogs fighting against hordes of Indians to save the lives of their masters.Rarely available today, El Gran Mastin was established as an internationally recognized rare breed by La Sociedad Cynologica Caribena in 1979. A tremendous amount of interest has been generated to restore the dog to its place among the Caribbean dog fancy. Local recognition began in the last part of the 19th century with overseers of the sugar cane, tobacco and coffee palntations. They are by origin and type the “old country” dogs tuned to cold rain forest region mountains, hot hills and tropical valley lands of Puerto Rico. For centuries Spanish landlords and noblemen kept these Mastiffs (referred to as “blood thirsty”) for protection and bloodsport. They are adept at bringing down feral steer, boar and dogs and fighting to the finish if allowed to.
