Latest German Shepherd Dog:

The name German Shepherd was for use in acknowledging the German Shepherd breed for the first time. This was during the end of World War, when anti- German sentiment was rampant of the era.  It was thought that just including the word “German” would harm the ability for the breed to show its true colors.  The German Shepherd made it through the decades until finally in 1977 the campaigns to revive the German Shepherd to its true name were successful. German Shepherd Dog Breed Appearance:

It takes a  real cold heart to not look into a cute German Shepherd’s puppy dog eyes and not just melt.  This is the description given by many German Shepherd owners.  The ability to fit into many households based on their medium build that can range between 55 and 65 centimeters (22 and 26 in) at the withers and weigh between 22 and 40 kilograms (49 and 88 lb). The ideal height is 63 centimeters (25 in), according to American Kennel Club standards. The German Shepherd’s forehead is dome in shape, with a tapered muzzle, ending in a diamond shaped black nose. The jaws are strong, with a scissor-like bite that makes them very good protector dogs.  The eyes are medium-sized and brown with a lively, intelligent, and self-assured look.   The German Shepherd’s ears are large and perk up at the faintest of sounds. Though ears pointed back is generally a sign of aggression, the German Shepherd breed is notorious for tucking them back during running or play.  The German Shepherd generally has a long bushy tail that hangs down to no longer than their hocks.

German Shepherd Dog Breed Origins and History:

In Europe during the 1800s, attempts were being made to ensure there were a set of standards for each dog breed and category of breed.  Specifically the German Shepherd dog breed was bred to preserve traits that assisted in their job of herding sheep and protecting flocks from predators, such as wolves.  During this time it was common practice within local communities, where shepherds hand selected and bred dogs that they believed carried the herding gene.  The need for a dog breed to have  intelligence, strength, and a keen sense of smell was more than apparently needed when herders were faced with the predators of their flocks.  The end result is the German Shepherd dog breed we see today.

German Shepherd Dog Breed Temperament:

German Shepherds are highly active dogs that requires to be handled and worked (exercised) daily to prevent bad habits from forming.  This breed like many of the “protector” breeds have been over publicized in bad light.  The breed is marked by a willingness to learn and an eagerness to have a purpose. Owners of a German Shepherd should know they are higher maintenance than other breeds.  The term “one man dog” is an often thought of the German Shepherds breed due to their  loyal nature and ability to bond well with their trainers. If given the opportunity however that natural instinct can make them become overly territorial, especially if not socialized correctly.  Its very important to begin training with your German Shepherd from a young age.  German Shepherd rescues are very strict on what dogs get adopted for this reason.  Any signs of aggression, as is with any instinctual animal, is a hard habit to extinguish.

GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG HISTORY:

No one breed of dog is for everyone, but there is one breed that could be for just about anyone. It’s known for its beauty and its brains; its strength and its gentleness. It’s a helper to the disabled, a guardian of homes, a companion to children, a protector of livestock, and a partner in crime-fighting. There is little this dog cannot do, and almost nothing it’s not willing to try. It’s the multi-purpose, multi-tasking, ever-popular, hard-working German Shepherd Dog.
