The Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen has its ancient origins in the Vendée region of France. This is a small (Petit), low (Basset), wire-haired (Griffon), French scent hound used for hunting rabbits. Originally bred from the white St. Hubert, White and Tan Italian Hound and the King’s White Grand Griffon (that is a larger, heavier, and longer Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen). It has been a popular hunting dog in France for almost 100 years.
AVERAGE LIFESPAN
This enchanting hound can live up to 12 years of age, but more often than not will reach 14 years when given the right nutrition and a loving home in which to thrive.

BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY :
Initially only the Grand Vendéen existed. It was a short-haired variety of Vendéen descending from the « Greffier » * or from the so-called « King ’s white hound »*. Neither should we forget mentioning the « griffon fauve de Bretagne » in its origins because the former enters for an important part into the bloodlines of the « Greffier ». The « Chien Gris de St. Louis » and the « Griffon de Bresse » (descendant of Segusian ancestors) brought as well their contribution to the creation of the Grand Griffon.

The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is a small, low to the ground dog and is about 50% longer than it is tall. The topline is level. The head is in good proportion with the rest of the body. The domed skull is oval in shape when viewed from the side. The stop is clearly defined. The black nose is large with wide nostrils. The teeth meet in a scissors or level bite. The oval eyes are large and dark. The thin, long, oval, hair-covered ears reach almost to the tip of the nose. The tail is medium in length, set high and carried like a saber well covered with hair. Dewclaws are sometimes removed. The long, outer coat is harsh to the touch with a thick short undercoat. The dog has shaggy eyebrows, beard and mustache. The coat is white with any combination of lemon, orange, black, sable, tricolor or grizzle markings.

Description: The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is a short and stocky dog. They stand 13-15 inches high and weigh between 31 and 40 pounds, there is little sizing difference between the male dog and the female bitch. They ar a little wide in body, with well muscled hindquarters. They have a fairly short but shaggy coat, with their diskette ears and a moustache like nose appearance. They have a look somewhere between the total ruffian and a dog version of Oliver twist. Their head and facial hair gives them a somewhat soulful expression.
Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen History:
Dating back to the sixteenth century in Europe, the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen obtained its name from being a canine that was low to the ground. The Vendeen portion of their name was derived simply from where they were discovered in Vendeen, France. The town of Vendeen is well known for its rugged terrain, making it not an ideal place for just any old canine to hunt and climb through. The Petit Basset was just the trailing dog that could handle these types of hunting textures to be an excellent choice for a companion dog for all hunters. In the eighteenth century, the Petit Basset became a popular choice for being a show dog in the United Kingdom. It has continued to be a dog that is bred all over France well into the middle of the 1900′s. It also goes by the name of Little Griffon Vendeen Basset as well. The breed finally got their recognition by the AKC in the late 1900′s around 1990.
Basset Griffon Vendeen Temperament:
While many assume the Petit Basset Griffon is a canine that bodes a wire fur coat requiring much grooming, it actually is not. They have a thick fur coat that resembles a wire one, but they are very easy to care for. They are generally very pleasant dogs with natural scenting abilities. This breed loves to explore, trail and play with their families. These dogs blend in well with little ones, just about every type of other household pet and can be welcoming with strangers that do enter their homes. Keep in mind, they are diggers and will be prone to do so as well as barking from time to time. Very affectionate creatures with excellent watchdog capabilities.
