The English Shepherd is an extremely versatile breed of working dog, developed in the United States from farmdogs brought by the settlers from England and Scotland. The English Shepherd is a highly intelligent, practical all-around farm dog, being used as a herding dog, watch dog, hunting dog, vermin eradicator and child’s companion. It was possibly the most common breed during the 1800s before fancy pedigrees became fashionable around the turn of the 19th century. Many farmers appreciated the breed for their versatility and not for their flash or strict conformation to a standard of appearance.

Energetic, intelligent, very active, agile, courageous and gritty. Fearless for their purpose. Acting immediately when commanded; very responsive to the master’s voice. Some individuals may excel in all of these activities, but most will have strengths and weaknesses for one or another purpose. Generally friendly dogs, however  they can be reserved with strangers. They make wonderful watch dogs, alerting the owner of approaching strangers. The English Shepherd needs a firm, but calm, confident, consistent pack leader in order to be mentally stable.

English Shepherds have been known as the “good ol’ farm dog”, because they perform a variety of tasks. They have even been known to aid in arguments between children and help them walk. Some are so personable that owners claim that “by the time they are five or six, you can carry on a decent conversation with him.
