Caucasian Shepherd Dog

2011 Caucasian Shepherd:

The Caucasian Ovcharka has moderate deep-set, dark eyes.  The ears are densely covered with hair for insulation.  The hips are slightly raised from the line of the back.  The tail is profusely covered with a long feathering of heavy hair.  The forelimbs are long, straight, and densely boned.  The paws are large and heavy, with hair between the toes, providing excellent insulation and protection.  The nose is black and prominent with well opened, large nostrils. The thick, dense, weather-resistant coat has profuse feathering and is especially effective at keeping out the cold.  Puppy coats are finer then adult coats.  Colors vary from gray, fawn, tan, pied, brindle and white.  The FCI prohibits brown dogs.  In its native country the Caucasian Ovtcharka’s ears are cropped short.

History of the Breed:

This is a popular breed that originated in Russia. This flock guardian dog had been developed from pre-historic molasses in Caucasus. The name of the dog “Caucasian Ovtcharka” means sheepdog of the Caucasian region. The local herders had developed this breed and used it to protect their sheep from predators and thieves. The dog’s striking physical characteristics and hard working abilities had always secured for it a lot of attention. However, the lack of organized kennel clubs and written standards had been responsible for variations being caused among the Caucasian Mountain Dogs of various nations.

Black Caucasian Shepherd:
The need for the dog to be used as a sheep guardian is fast dying out. However, extensive breeding programs for the dog are being undertaken throughout Hungary, Poland and the Czech and Slovak Republics and the popularity of the dog stays high. The Caucasian Shepherd Dog is a very popular dog breed especially in Georgia, Armenia, and Southern Russia. The Caucasian Shepherd is also known as the Caucasian Ovcharka and is one of the ancient dog breeds. This breed was used to protect the livestock from the predators like wolves, bears and others. The Caucasian Shepherd breed somewhat resembles a bear.

Caucasian Shepherd:

Caucasian Shepherd Dogs are of two types: mountain and plain. The plain ones normally have a shorter coat and they also appear taller. They are not very heavily built. On the other hand, mountain type has a heavier coat and are more muscularly built.

Caucasian Shepherd Temperament:

Caucasian Shepherds are very brave, alert and strong. They should be properly trained and socialised. This breed has very strong guarding instincts. This dog will protect everyone and everything, which he considers as his family. This may include children, other dogs and even the family cats. You must understand one thing though. This dog will perceive rough child’s play between a family member and a friend to be a threat and its hardwired protect-the-flock genetics will immediately kick in!
