Until a few years ago Catalan Sheepdogs were nearing extinction. It was a Spanish breeder from D’Espinavesa kennels in the the province of Catalan that started to bring the breed back to prominence all over Europe.The breed has retained its original purity. Todays dogs remain typical in type and appearance to their ancestorsSheepdogs are active intelligent dogs with a well balanced and pleasant nature. They should be easily trainable and though initially wary of strangers they generally make an excellent and loyal family pet. They do have a dominant herding instinct and will naturally herd and protect, but this in a controlled body movement and not usually aggressive in nature. They are tolerant of small animalsThe Catalan Sheepdog looks similar to the Bearded Collie- they have a prominent beard and mustache and they are about the same size as the English Springer Spaniel. They were developed in the region of Catalonia in northeast Spain, two distinct forms arose, differing in coat length. The short-coated version, sometimes described as Gos d’Atura Cerda, is now very scarce. Traditionally, the ears of this sheepdog were cropped to make it appear to be more ferocious. These dogs acted as messengers and guard dogs in the Spanish Civil War.
