Believed to have descended from the Vendeen hounds of the Gris de St. Louis. This breed was severely reduced during World War II and is still relatively unknown even in France. They are primarily used for hunting hare, fox and even big game.receptive and very determined medium-sized griffon is rather stocky and well proportioned. It is the only breed to have kept the “Briquet” name, which means medium-sized dog. The Count of Elva began a controlled breeding program before World War I to produce a smaller, improved version of the Grand Griffon Vendéen. The population was hit badly during both World Wars, but reappeared again in 1946 and today there is a large stock. In 1995, a team of Briquets won the French cup for roe deer hunting. Wild boar are also hunted.
