The Berner is a large dog that is intelligent, strong and agile. Male dogs are usually 25-27 inches in height and weigh anywhere between 90-110 pounds. The females are generally smaller weighing 70-90 pounds. They have thick heavy coats that should be brushed often to prevent matting, and they should never be cut. Their coats keep them warm in winter, and also protects them from the sun’s harsh rays in summer.

Bernese Mountain Dogs are self-confident alert and good natured. They are very affectionate and they are especially good with children. They do tend to shed a great deal but this can be minimized somewhat with proper care and grooming. They are not a drooling breed.They are somewhat susceptible to a few disorders, including hip and elbow displasia. Having them tested in early adulthood is highly reccomended and a must if you intend to breed.Slight defects in vision are also common in the Berner.
