Brown Belgian Shepherd Dog (Laekenois):
The body is sturdy and well proportioned, with a squarely shaped appearance when viewed from the side. The erect ears are triangle in shape with the height equal to the width, set high on the head. The moderately pointed muzzle is parallel to the topline of the skull and tapers, but is not excessively pointy. The muzzle and head are fringed, giving the dog a shaggy, woolly look. The medium sized, almond-shaped eyes are dark with rims that contrast with lighter color hair. The hindquarters are muscular, without looking heavy. Dense hair is bushy on the tail, but there is no distinct feathering. The chest is deep, reaching to the elbow. The front legs are very straight and parallel and vertical to the ground. The round feet are cat-like in appearance. Dewclaws are usually removed. The long tail is thick at the base and reaches at least to the hock. The nose is black and the lips should be tight. The teeth should meet in a scissors or level bite. The Laekenois’s medium length rough, wire coat covers the body in hair that can reach over two inches. Colors include a range from fawn to mahogany with a black overlay.

Black Belgian Shepherd Dog (Laekenois):
Developed in Belgium for guarding and herding of sheep. They were formally recognized as the Belgian Shepherd Dog in 1891. Present in the gene pool of these dogs there were dogs with long coats, short coats, rough or wired coats and a variance of colors. Making the Belgian Shepherd Dog with four varieties. The Groenendalel (known simple as the Belgium Sheepdog), with a solid long black coat, the Laekenois, a rough or wire-coat in fawn, red or brown, the Malinois, a short coated in fawn, red or brown and the Tervueren, a long coated fawn or dark red dog. The American Kennel Club has recognized three of these four varieties. The British Kennel Club regards them as a single breed and the Federation Cynologique states one breed with four varieties. Because of this, the dogs are always registered on their coat type and color, not of their parents.

However, they can be shown in Britain, Canada, Australia, and throughout Europe, along with all three of the closely related breeds which share a heritage with the Laekenois: the Tervuren, the Malinois, and the Groenendael, the last being shown in the U.S. as the Belgian Sheepdog.

The Laekenois Belgian Shepherd is a medium sized working dog with a fun and energetic personality. The dog was originally bred to help with herding and is also a loyal and gentle companion. The dog is great around children and is very protective of its family. The Laekenois Belgian Shepherd is fiercely territorial and will defend its yard and home from intruders of every size. It is also an intelligent dog that can respond to many different commands after being trained.Origin & History – This breed is the rarest of the four Belgium Sheepdogs and is one of the two breeds still used primarily for working. All four of these breeds are often referred to as simply Belgium Sheepdogs even though that are distinct upon further observation. To make things even more confusing, all four breeds share a similar breeding pool that includes many of the same foundation dogs in their individual breeds. It is believed that the Laekenois Belgian Shepherd breed started in 1885 and has matured over the years as the use of the dog for policing, bomb detection, couriers and other duties has expanded.

This can be a very gentle breed that will come to attention when needed to alert you to an intruder. Their sweet disposition makes them the perfect pet for most families as does their innate desire to please their masters. They are a highly intelligent and social dog that loves the company and interaction a family can provide. They prefer playing with the family to any other activity and will bond quickly with family members they consider to be part of their pack. As part of this pack they will attempt to dominate smaller or older dogs and they should be exposed to new pets slowly to allow for adjustment. They may also try to extend this dominance to small children and should be corrected here as well. The dog craves attention and should not be isolated for long periods of time. If left alone they may act out by chewing furniture and other items.
